MACH Nebriowa Flint.

(Am NZ Ch. Dwynella Look Me Over x Pelona Chardonnay)

Breeder: Ilona Peckham

Owner: Gail Mahood

DOB: 5/23/95

Flint was awarded High Scoring PWC at the GGPWCF first AKC Agility Trial June 22-23 at Robertson Park in Livermore. He received this honor by running a course the greatest number of seconds under Standard Course Time. Flint is owned and handled by Gail Mahood. Gail and Flint, as you can see by the MACH (Master Agility Champion) prefixing his name, are having a very successful career in the agility ring. The team came in 4th in the 12" class at the 2001 AKC National Agility Championships, and he was 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the 1999 and 2000 USDAA Grand Prix of Dog Agility. He also has his CGC and HIC (herding instinct certified by PWCCA). In addition to being a star in the agility ring, he is also a certified Delta Society therapy dog and works in the wards at Stanford Hospital. Congratulations to Gail and Flint on this wonderful achievement. We wish them the best as they work towards their MACH2.

The GGPWCF would like to thank Fagan Fotos for donating the picture of MACH Nebriowa Flint. Fagan Fotos was the official photographer for the 2002 GGPWCF AKC Agility Trial. Fagan Fotos can be reached at: faganfotos@yahoo.com

Fannie & Rachel

Rachel Halop & Rocky L Pajama Party

It is always a joy to see our Junior handlers participate in conformation, and recently we have seen more of them participate in performance events such as agility. Rachel and Fannie participated in GGPWCF first annual AKC agility trial. Rachel's Mom, Lisa Halop-Freer, is a member of the GGPWCF. It was amazing watching this team running the agility course. I asked if Rachel would like to write an article about her experiences competing in conformation and agility, and she willingly obliged. Below is her article as well as pictures taken at the GGPWCF Agility trial. We wish Rachel and Fannie the best as they continue their agility career.

Fannie & Rachel

All Photos by Fagan Fotos

My name is Rachel Halop and I am 14 years old. When I was 7 years old we got our first Corgi, "Polly." She is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and is my mom's favorite. We showed her for a couple of years until we found out that she had bad hips and shoulders, so we spayed her. A year later we got another female Pembroke Welsh Corgi, "Wicket," showed her for a couple of years, won a couple points and bred her three times. My mom told me if I helped to raise the litters I could earn one of the puppies, so I did. That was in April 2000. That's how I got "Fannie," Rocky L Pajama Party (CH Larchmonts Forte x Reeses Sticky Wicket). I raised her and have been showing her ever since.

"Fannie" is a 2-year-old red-headed-tri Pembroke Welsh Corgi. She is a very sweet, high-energy dog and I love her VERY MUCH. First we started doing conformation shows with "Fannie" and did pretty well, but after a while she decided she did not like the show ring thing. I had seen agility demos on TV, at the Cow Palace and at the State Fair and that's when I started to get interested in agility. I signed up for some lessons in the summer of 2001 with Laurie Buckley (Jackpot Agility) and "Fannie" seemed to really enjoy this fun sport. Ever since we have been going to lessons, a fun match and a 4-H agility competition.

The GGPWCF agility match at Livermore in June this year was so much fun for "Fannie" and me. Not only was this our first REAL agility trial ever, but we got our first 2 "legs!" They were in the Novice A Standard and Jumpers With Weaves. I could not believe that we got them so quick! But I guess it all goes back to the training and practice. "Fannie" and I have had so much fun with agility and I know we will continue.

Meanwhile I have been doing conformation showing and AKC Jr. Showmanship with my other dog "Dash" who of course is another Pembroke Welsh Corgi! (Reeses Red the Riot Act (CH Larchmonts Jafar x Sfh Kdor Dsign For Ninacorte)) I co-own "Dash" with Heather Hutchison, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi breeder. My mom and I have gone with Heather and her son Ryan to many different shows for years and we have had a great time. "Dash" and I got a second in an AKC Jr. Showmanship class this year and I was very proud.

"Fannie" just had a litter of puppies with "Dash" (they were REALLY nice too!) and will probably have another next year. Having the puppies is so much fun but it is hard to let them go. My mom said that the next litter that "Fannie" has I would be able to keep one of the puppies. With this puppy I will do Conformation and AKC Jr. Showmanship. I will probably do agility with this puppy too.

On July 20 and 21, 2002, I will be going to another AKC agility trial with "Fannie" at Hangtown KC. We just need 2 more legs in the Novice A Standard and JWW classes and we will have our 2 first titles. I hope we make it! I have made my own agility course in my backyard and have been going to more lessons this summer. "Fannie" and I have been working very hard and I know that we will do very well in the future.

Musical freestyle is literally dancing with your dog. There are two categories- Heel to Music and Musical Freestyle. In Heel to music the dog and owner must not be more than two feet apart, in Musical Freestyle anything goes. New and innovative moves such as leg weaves, spins, turns, backing, lateral moves and jumping over your legs and arms are encouraged. So long as the move is safe for the dog with the exception of touching or picking up your dog it's ok. Freestyle is judged like figure skating with at least three judges judging. You are judged in many different categories in both technical and artistic divisions. You are judged on your costume as well. To get your first title which Tag has earned, you need at least a 7.25 score in both technical and artistic to earn a leg and you need two legs. As you progress in freestyle you need more legs and higher scores to get titles.

Tag earned his W-FD -MF (World freestyle dog- musical freestyle) title in two back to back shows and was high in both technical and artistic divisions. He is the first dog in the state of California to earn this title. I am extremely proud of him as we have only been training for this for five months. I have a great trainer and choreographer that we work with. I train the tricks and she helps me put it all to music. We are very busy training for the nationals in Michigan in the first week of November. We will be the only team from Ca competing. Freestyle is very big back east but the west is starting to discover it.

Freestyle is a truly wonderful and creative sport. I encourage all corgi owners to try it, your corgi will love it.

This time we are actually "revisiting" a previous "Cover Dog": Meet Jack!

Jack

CH. Golden Roads Jack Straw, UD, PT, VC

"Jack" is my first Corgi, bred by Christine Johnson. He finished his breed Championship early in his career, and went on to many BOB's and group placements. He started his obedience career in 2002, finishing his CD in the spring with scores averaging between 198 and 199.5. Along the way Jack recieved multiple all breed High in Trials. That fall he went on the get his CDX doing an equally nice job.

During the summer of 2002 he also made his debut in herding trials, getting his HT, and a couple months later his PT degrees. Most of 2003 was spent getting ready for Utility in obedience, and his HS degree in herding. He came out in Utility last fall and went on to finish his UD. By finishing his UD it also gave him enough points to be considered a Versatility Corgi (VC) by the national club. This year (2004) Jack is now back in the obedience ring competing for his UDX. He has 3 legs so far (needing 10), and has accumulated 15 OTCH pts. along the way.

Simon wins BIM and BP at the GGPWCF Spring Match 2003!Simon titles twice at Rancho Murieta Dec 2004Simon wins BIM at the Northern CA Herding Breeds Assn "A" Match in Sacramento, 2005

"Simon" is my first male Corgi, bred by Faerie Glen Corgis, aka Joyce 'n Linda. His first BIG win was at the GGPWCF Spring match 2003. (Big for us anyway!) Although he doesn't get to too many shows, we're still working hard on his Championship, having won 12 points with both majors so far. Simon really hasn't been exactly rushing to finish his championship - he's actually been much busier with his agility career and having WAY more fun too, winning both AKC STD adn JWW Novice titles in only three shows. He's also earned his AKC Open Jumpers title and is currently competing at the Excellent level, and is doing well in NADAC Agility as well. His biggest handicap is his handler - me!

Simon and Fannie in the pondSimon and Meg with the "eggplant"

Simon stays very busy at home keeping track of the horses, (county fair) project goats and helping to raise his latest nieces and nephews. He's probably one of the sweetest, most honest dogs I've known. He's a RABID swimmer, dedicated "ball dog" and a squeaky toy fiend. (He was actually playing so hard one day that he ran right into a wall trying to be FIRST to the ball - and broke his leg! And THAT barely slowed him down!) He is a real "hugger", a joy to live with, fun to show and gives his best, no matter what I ask or how many silly mistakes I make! Let's hear it for good hearted, snuggly, easy going BOYS!

And here is the next, (but not least) cover dog from MUCH farther south, in sunny California, meet "Dylan:"

Dylan

"Dylan," aka Rincon's Fox in the Henhouse, owned and loved by Denise Clements, bred by Barbara Calderwood and me (Kathy Dolge). So called because Denise has a chicken coop with many chickens, and when she took Dylan (on leash) to see them his first day at her house they all ran off, ranting and raving. She was confused because the chickens LIKE her Aussies, but when she told her husband, he said "Denise, he looks like a fox!" So his name came to be. Dylan is a puppy from my last litter, born 4/20/04. I've been showing him for his owners and he only needs 4 single points to finish. He's quite the handsome lad.

He finished with a total of 4 majors. Many thanks to his handler Catherine Collins for her expert handling of him. Radar is one of her favorites:) Radar also finished his Rally Novice title in May and continues to train regularly in obedience. He loves to learn and is a fun dog to train in any venue and is my constant companion.

Because "Jack" has again achieved a major honor, we are here to celebrate!

OTCH Jack!

CH OTCH Golden Road's Jack Straw UDX PT VC

Although Jack has graced the Cover Dog position in the past, he recently finished his greatest achievement to date. On October 29, 2005 Jack became an Obedience Trial Champion - or OTCH!

There are very few OTCH Corgis in the country, and even fewer that are breed champions. This is a dream we have worked on since I first started training Jack as a pup. I always felt that he was a special boy with many talents, and so far I have been right!

His new title is Ch.OTCH Golden Road's Jack Straw UDX PT VC. Jack and I will continue to compete in Obedience. He has been invited to the AKC Invitational in January, and we are hoping in the future to also venture into Tracking.

Re-visiting a previous cover dog, "Fannie the Fabulous" and her owner Rachel Halop.

Rachel Halop &
Rocky L Pajama Party then...

Rachel and Fannie"Simon," "Fannie," Rachel and "Luke" and NOW!

Mt. Democrat article Jan 25, 2006, featuring the whole crew!

Rachel and "Fannie" were first featured as the GGPWCF Cover Dog in the Summer of 2002 right after successfully embarking on an agility career as a Junior Handler with her homebred tri-colored lightning bolt PWC bitch, "Fannie." Today, after many, many trials, ribbons and titles they are still going strong. Although Rachel is on the eve of "aging out" of the Junior program, she and "Fannie" have no plans to quit and have in fact, long range plans to compete in the 2006 National Specialty as GGPWCF member participants. "Fannie" whizzed through her AKC Novice agility titles in 2002 and then stalled at the Open level for 18 months when the regulation 12" jump heights proved her ultimate demise due to her unfortunate 1/4 inch height over the limit. In the NADAC agility arena, Corgis are given the option of "sizing down" one jump height to 8" and in that venue she excelled, reaching the Elite level of competition without much struggle. So when AKC introduced the "Preferred" level of competition, allowing "Fannie" to compete at 8" she and Rachel resumed their quest for gold. (after having to start ALL over at the Novice level!)

In the interim, however, there were a few delays: a couple litters of puppies, as well as a competition career and MAJOR health challenge - a torn cruciate ligament. In the winter of 2005 they weaned a litter of puppies and then underwent TPLO surgery with a fabulous veterinarian recommended by our very own new club member Laura Craig, and after many months of rehab resumed their agility training and competition! In Dec 2005 "Fannie" finished her Open Jumpers Title and soon after earned her Open STD title, now competing at the Excellent level. Rachel has also been competing with a Yellow Lab with whom she completed his Excellent B JWW title (2005) and hopes to finish his Excellent B STD title in 2006. "Fannie's" latest litter (x CH Faerie Glen Matrix the One) produced a really sharp conformation bitch with whom Rachel showed and won her first conformation point ever. She decided winning points was far superior to Jr. Showmanship (!), but still prefers agility overall.

So, "Fannie" the all purpose PWC and star of the Rocky L Ranch continues be the foundation for Rachel's agility "team" now and for years to come. Good luck!

Kris and LinaLinaKris adn Lina's vacation

"Lina" came into our lives in August of 1996 when Judy Charon delivered her to us at the Cascade PWCC specialty. When the hotel room door opened, there sat Marty Downing holding a ribbon-adorned puppy in her lap. It was love at first sight! Lina would be my third Pem to train and show and we wasted no time getting started. She quickly earned the Utility Dog title and has two legs on the UDX title. Our goal was to compete in agility at the PWCCA national in Oregon and we did so successfully, going on to earn Master Agility titles in both Standard and Jumpers. John was working with her and our Saint Bernard in tracking and, after being in some "bad luck" tests, she earned her TD earlier this year. Now, for something more to do, we're in the Rally ring and she's earned her Rally Advanced title. When we can compete again (judging gets in the way sometimes), we'll aim for the Rally Excellent title. And the TDX training has begun in earnest with sights set on the PWCCA national in 2006.

Lina is an absolutely perfect and delightful Corgi! She has always been in control of the three Saints she's lived with and she and our current Saint, Kris, are playmates and buddies. They bring much joy to our lives!

Please welcome "Ocho," who is ... not .... exactly ... a Corgi. BUT, he THINKS he is! He's grown up with Corgis and has just recently raised a litter of corgi pups!

"Ocho"

"Ocho" is the Rocky L Ranch's newest Corgi puppy wrangler. He's been right in there hanging out with them since the day these pups were born Nov 2006. Sometimes when all SEVEN of them play follow the leader he gets a bit overwhelmed, and the day they discovered he has a TAIL, he was less than thrilled. ("look Ma, a new tug-toy!") But he is very patient and loves his newest buddies and especially loves the new game he invented, "Bowling for Puppies!" He wrassles and tumbles with them and then jumps up on top of a box or something high, just out of reach. He watches and bats at them from above (politely refraining from exposing his claws) while they stumble around looking for him, wondering where he disappeared to. He's the same color and height as the adult Corgis, so it's no wonder they're confused....

Here's "Grady," agility/obedience/herding Corgi extraordinaire and "Nigel," quite the showman! Just another example of the versatility of the PWC.

ASCA Started Level Sheep, AKC Rally Advanced Excellent, and AHBA Herding Ranch Dog I Sheep

Jade Tree Penway Keep The Change, RAE, PT, CGC
(CH Larchmonts Dream Dust x Jade Tree Penway The Bee Keeper)

Cash earned his AKC PT in May 2007, and also earned his Started level Sheep (STDs) title in a herding trial by ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of Amercia) July 2007, at Vacaville, quite a challenging trial compared to AKC's because scoring is tough and they prefer Aussies. Not only did he qualify both days, but got 2nd and 3rd placements in his class of 11, competing against all-breed dogs. He was the only Corgi to qualify and get placed both days.

UPDATE: On 12/9/07 Cash got his 2nd leg for the weekend's AHBA (Am. Herding Breed Assn) Herding Ranch Dog Level I sheep title, with 2nd placement, before a Bordie Collie and a working Kelpie! Cashis now promoted to the Ranch Dog status, beyond his JHD (Junior Herding Dog) level earned this July. Normally only Border Collies or herding breeds who work regularly in a ranch compete in this type of coursebut Cash did it! This makes CFO+Cash team's commendable record of Q'ing in every single test/trial in Rally and Herding they have run. In 2007, Cash's 6 herding trial legs in all three herding associations (AKC, AHBA, ASCA) sheep runs have all been earned with placements in these all breed events!! We don't know about the future but if they have found their niche, they will learn well and enjoy the sport in the next few years.

Thanks for your encouragement and patience in reading our report cards :-)

Pat Jensen would have been very proud of his Larchmont structure and temperament.

Here we have another of the wonderful "Golden Road" corgis; meet PEARL!

Ch. Golden Road’s Love of Pearls and Christine Johnson

“Pearl”
Ch. Golden Road’s Love of Pearls UD RN
(Greenforests Dotti West x Ch. Tallyrand’s No Greater Love)

Pearl was born in February 1999, our first litter born at our new place in the country we named Golden Road Farm. When she was born we exclaimed that she was wearing a pearl necklace as her collar looked like a single pearl on a string around her neck, and she became Pearl from that moment on.

I’m quite proud that Pearl earned her Championship title with 4 majors all under breeder judges. She was a wonderful mommy dog and many of her children have won titles of their own, including Pebbles of Golden Road RE PT UD, Golden Road’s Miss Ella Fitz RA HT AX AXJ, Golden Road’s the Gardener HSAs NAJ and Golden Road’s Silver Medley HSAs RN.

Pearl thrilled us all at our recent GGPWCF Specialty. She won High in Trial in the Obedience trial with a fabulous score of 198 from the Open B class. Looking back at the last six years of our Specialty, Golden Road dogs have won this honor five times! The following day she won the Veteran Bitch class and an Award of Merit. The judge proclaimed her Best Veteran at the banquet, completing a most memorable Specialty show for us.

A few weeks after the Specialty Pearl earned her Utility Dog title – our dream finally realized. Pearl didn’t start her Obedience career until the age of five and the Utility Dog title has been the most difficult for us to achieve. I’m so proud of her! We’re jumping right in to work on the UDX degree.

If you ask Pearl, eating cookies is her top priority and she’s most happy cuddling on the couch with us. She does love to train and travel with me, and is the most wonderful companion anyone could ask for.

 Cash working cattle July 2009

In June 2009 Cash earned a new AHBA title, Herding Trial Arena Dog I on goats.
Cash worked cattle in July 2009 for the first time.

By 2007-2008, he had already earned his AKC HSAs, ASCA STDs, and AHBA HRDI sheep titles (triple Started level herding titles).

Cash vs. the bee and the bee won!Cash overcomes!

Cash finished his AKC Herding Started Sheep Course A title July 6, 2009, at the Vaca Valley Stock Dog Club trial with 5th placement.
The day before, July 5, right before he was ready to go inside the ring, he stepped on a bee and it stung his right front paw.
These two pictures were taken on July 5 by herding trial photographer, who was actually sitting up on tall tower taking other dogs' trial photos
when she noticed Cash had been "injured" by stepping on the bee. She turned camera to capture the first picture,
where Cash was claiming "big time paw sting" and receiving pampering from mom and dad.

(The Judge changed Cash's run order to the end.)

She got the second picture when Cash went back into the ring after resting, but "calling the run" and telling people
"Hey, are you nuts? I can't put pressure on that paw and herd sheep too!

(You'll be happy to know Cash is fully recovered!)

NEWS FLASH!

March 2010: CASH earned Herding Ranch Dog I title on Geese from the AHBA.

Then since we don't have cattle to practice with in No. California, we drove to Idaho's AKC trials...

June/July 2010: Cash the super trooper, gave out his best efforts, has earned total of 2 Started Duck legs and 3 Started Cattle legs (=new title), trialing in back to back All Breed Herding trials in 2 States (ID and CA), within 8 days time.

All these legs earned with placements. The Herding Started Cattle (HSAc) legs show higher scores everyday, including a HIT on 7/3/10.

He also won the Hign Combined PWC breed award from the Vaca Valley Stockdog Club's 3 day trials.
Cash is just simply amazing.

Cash is always serious about what he does and worries about not doing a good job, Tony and I feel much indebted to Cash and can not repay him enough.
He may not be a natural in meeting the many challenges in herding, but he really tries and obeys and works as a partner.
It's not the titles he has earned, it's his dedication and love to help us when called upon.

This July 4th is very special for us and Cash, and JTP, and for everyone locally in our GGPWCF Club who knows Cash and understands his journey.
We have no access to cattle practice and the AKC stats show only 1-2 PWCs earning the HSAc title per year (usually).

Seldom by an urban older Corgi and an inexperienced cattle handler like Tony!.

I keep repeating our thanks to you as fans and people who have helped us get started in herding by answering our emails and sharing experiences,
you are so generous to offer help and cheers.  Cash is not alone in his journey.

AND THEN....

Tony and Cash earned their last leg needed for AKC's HSAd title at the Gig Harbor All Breed Club of Western Washington trial 8/22/2010.  He got 5th place, score 72. First place 79. Many thanks to judge Dana Mackenzie. This new title is the 3rd herding title Cash earned since March of 2010.

In June 2010, Oscar earned 2 AKC Started Cattle legs with a RHIT and placements at the Idaho Herding Association trials (his first cattle runs).

He has also earned a Started Ducks leg too.

Then in July, he earned his first ASCA Started Cattle leg with a 4th placement behind three farmbred Border Collies. The Judge operates a cattle farm in WA and has Kelpies.... she praised Oscar being "nice job, a little speed demon having such a huge heart."  She told Tony "trust your dog, he knows his stuff."  How rewarding. "Lacey"

Renee Agarwal, a teacher and artist, has been a GGPWCF member since the 90's with her corgis, Sofie-Medesham's Choice, UD and Pelona's Morgan le Fay, CDX. Sofie-Medesham's Choice UD (Chelsea), also a rescue, was an extremely hyperactive one-year-old. Renee helped her channel all that energy into obedience and tracking. She actually got her UD in only 5 trials, and also earned the Marty Downing Award.

Pelona's Morgan le Fay CDX (Morgan), earned a Dog World Award for 3 scores over 195 out of 200 by three different obedience judges. Morgan was also the mascot at the Montessori Preschool where Renee was the Director, and helped numerous children get over fear of dogs.

Then Renee got another rescue corgi from the club in 2007, named Glenmar's Lacey Beatrice. Sadly, Lacey injured her shoulder shortly after Renee got her, but has now healed completely. In fact, last week (March 2011), she passed a Herding Instinct Test with flying colors at Task Farm in Leona Valley near Palmdale. She really turned on to sheep once the herding light bulb "turned on." Lacey just started in training to become a Therapy Dog. Needless to say, Renee is very proud of her versatile and very sweet girl.
